Beauty

A gun lies on the juxtaposed wings of a Luna moth. The insects in the drawing (moths, caterpillars, and beetles) are generally perceived as not only pests but grotesque in appearance as well. Close up, however, many species of insects are quite beautiful, painted in vibrant colors that blend in with the landscape.

Insects are notorious for being a nuisance since they eat or bore holes in the surrounding environment; however, these activities are necessary to support the ecosystem and sustain life. Alternatively, the gun is often viewed as beautiful or powerful, yet is used to bore holes into things and destroy life. The bullets in the drawing are, in fact, scarab beetles, the more appropriate ammunition to protect us from self-annihilation.

Can we possibly be driving ourselves to extinction by killing what is inherently beautiful and promoting the ugly?

How can we possibly see beauty without respecting life itself?
